What the teaching unions said:

ATL general secretary, Dr Mary Bousted, said:

“This three year award should give stability for schools to plan their budgets and help in the recruitment and retention of teachers.

“However, this deal doesn’t match the current rate of inflation. ATL will continue to argue that pay awards should protect teachers’ pay in real terms.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT said:

“The question for teachers now will be whether the award is a sufficient incentive to continue their high level of commitment to the Government’s own punishing agenda for change and to maintain the upward trend in recruitment and retention.

“The NASUWT has already embarked on polling its members to gauge their response to the award and to feed this into the statutory consultation.”

Steve Sinnott General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said:

“Teachers will be worse off. This pay settlement of 2.45% for 2008 is well below the rate of inflation of 4%which was also announced today. This will reduce the standard of living for teachers and exacerbate the problems of recruitment and retention.

“The NUT Executive will be meeting next week and I have no doubt they will want a robust response”.

A good question Bryan, although the particular problem to which you refer is not one that has been brought to our attention in recent years. Perhaps someone could let us know if this is still common practice?

Does the same principle now apply to calculations of part months at the beginning or end of a period of employment, i.e. where the start is not the first of the month, or the end is not the last day of the month?

I well remember, in my first job in local government, being docked a day's pay (1/365) because I started work on the 2nd of the month, a Monday! When I complained, I was told that I should have given notice to my previous employer to end my employment on Sunday 1 August, not the last working day in July.
